When southeastern Michigan was plunged into a deep freeze for weeks last winter, New Haven’s propane-powered buses “started every day,” Brohl said. But the biggest selling point is reduce costs, Walmsley said. At about $95,000 each, propane-powered buses are about $10,000 more expensive than their diesel counterparts, but proponents contend reduced fuel and maintenance costs more than offset the additional expense.
