Say good-bye to those asthma-inducing diesel fumes from idling school buses. When school opens Tuesday in Boston, thousands of students will board the school system’s first-ever propane-fueled buses, considered more environmentally friendly and quieter than traditional diesel buses.
School is back in session and those iconic yellow school buses are back on the road. But what’s fueling them is changing. While more than ninety percent of all school buses do still run on diesel, many have been retrofitted to run cleaner. And buses that run on alternative fuel are making inroads.
Thirty-five propane gas-fueled Blue Bird Vision Propane buses will go on the road in Detroit this school year to transport Detroit Public School students. In less than two weeks, Kings Park public school students will be shepherded to school in yellow buses with a heavy dose of green. The district purchased four new propane school buses this year. The decision to begin transitioning to propane vehicles was a “no-brainer,” Superintendent Timothy T. Eagen said in an interview Thursday. The buses arrived last week.
